Tuna ......... Some of the Fundamentals

Posted by Patrick von Stieglitz on April 25, 2012 at 4:49pm 2 Comments

Simply put, a fish cage is a bag hanging in the water.

Question is;

Can you catch by handline, poling and trapping tuna and successfully put them in a special cage and look after the fish until harvest time.

1)    Tuna exhibit an extraordinary ability to learn.

2)    Happy tuna are healthy tuna.   $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

3)    Shock……. Cause and onset of shock will be the most common cause of death for a tuna.

4)    Southern Bluefin…

Video - Bluefin Tuna Surface Explosion On Kite Baits

Posted by John LoGioco on February 18, 2012 at 1:41pm 2 Comments

Probably the best video of bluefin exploding on kite baits AND being tagged and released that I have seen.  Capt. Bob Cook and crew over at Fat Tuna Guide Service hailing from Massachusetts did a fantastic job with this footage.   Thanks Capt. Bob for your efforts on tagging.  Kite fishing is so exciting.  Down here in New Jersey the kite hasn't really caught on.  Last year…

NMFS Closes Bluefin Fishery, Tag & Release OK

Posted by John LoGioco on January 22, 2012 at 3:11pm 0 Comments

Folks, NMFS has closed the large medium and giant Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery for the General Category (commercial category) and for charter boats fishing commercially on January 22nd, 2012.  For recreational bluefin fishermen, this mostly impacts boats fishing right now in North Carolina where the fish are big and the captains make an agreement with charters that the boat keeps fish to sell under their commercial license. …

Man vs. Tuna, A Fair Fight

Posted by John LoGioco on January 2, 2012 at 4:16pm 0 Comments

This is one of my favorite videos of all time.  Take notice of the small things like the white feather jigs, leather harness belt and the small rail guard keeping these guys from falling into the waves with the tuna and sharks.  I also love the WWII like helmets these guys wore.  Stay with the video for the first few minutes and wait for the bigger tuna to start coming over the rail.  Truly amazing.  In our day of ultra modern fishing equipment both recreational and…
